Muslim alcohol handling discrimination claim hits Tesco

Mohammed Ahmed worked as fork lift truck driver in a Tesco Distribution Centre. He claimed that during a busy period he was required to handle alcohol, that this was against his faith, and that he had not been informed of this when he started working there.

I’d love to try and call this one, but post-Ladele who knows which way the tribunal will find? The system is badly in need of a definitive case on employment duties versus religious faith. Some recommended reading however is:

By the by, I worked briefly in a chilled Tesco distribution centre when a student. It was certainly enough to make one turn to religion, or litigation, or both.
