I'm a huge supporter of Maternal Leave rights, but I'm beginning to wonder whether all this new legislation is really needed? Instead, I think more effort should be put into encouraging firms to fully realise the benefits of allowing their staff (both male and female) time off to care for their new-born. I hear all too often about 'unwritten rules' whereby pregnant staff are expected to return to work as soon as legally possible after the birth or expect redundancy.

There are always ways round these laws, so perhaps it's time to stop making more and start promoting the societal benefits of the current system.
