This is a new updated about me page, as the old one told you nothing at all. My circumstances have now changed such that I can peep out of the closet a little bit.

I qualified as a solicitor in 2005, but after it became clear that practice was going to be even worse than the training contract I eventually became disillusioned. My next employment was with a company as an Employment Law Consultant, mainly providing employment advice and on-site consultancy to small businesses across the UK. I’m still there now. This role is interesting in that it:

  • provides a better service to businesses;
  • and at better value than a solicitors’ firm;
  • yet I never have to do any overtime;
  • nor do I have to maintain a practising certificate;
  • and I get paid more.

Although I’ll admit to being worried about my karma, if such a thing exists. I appear at employers’ premises like an angel of death, and where I tread redundancies and disciplinaries follow.

It’s now time to change again however, and go with what’s been the real plan for quite some time now. On 31st March I leave my current employ, and become a pupil barrister. It’s not at a chambers that specialises in employment law (nor would you really describe it as a commercial set, although I’ll avoid crime thankfully). I’ll therefore be generalising out of my comfort zones. Right now I’m also terrified that as I was exempt from the BVC I actually know naff-all about how to actually do whatever it is that pupils do from day to day, but I can cope with a steep curve when it hits me.

Hope those of you that visit this site enjoy the insight. I’ll still not come out of the closet completely, but I have to save something to keep you interested…

EDIT: - I’ve now started the pupillage. I miss my old job, and my salary, but it’s pretty cool so far.
